Only when we know the history of where we live can it become 'home'. Without history, our understanding of regional politics, culture, and landscape lack depth and we lack roots. Without roots, we are like tumbleweeds, an opportunistic species that blows from place to place, colonizing disturbed landscape. Teaching Pacific Northwest history in Victoria gives me a chance to seek that history, put down roots and help others to find their places.
