Letters of Reference

If you are an undergraduate student applying for employment or further study, I will be happy to write a
letter of recommendation or complete a recommendation form if you have done well in at least one course
taken from me (or, of course, if I have supervised your Honours Thesis) and if your transcript as a whole
is strong enough that I can endorse you.

For applicants to law school or graduate programs in economics, reviewers are normally asked to comment
on the student's writing abilities. You should therefore provide me with a graded term paper, essay, or
similar evidence of writing ability from your undergraduate years (any course is fine) so that I can assess
this. This is also desirable, although not essential, for applicants to other types of programs, such as
MBA programs, or employment.

I can only write letters of recommendation directed toward a specific objective, such as particular
educational programs or employment. Except in unusual circumstances it is not possible for me to provide
you with a general letter of reference, because the letter I write will depend on what it is to be used
for. There are many students who I could recommend for employment or an MBA program, for example,
who would not be suited for graduate school in economics.
