ICP-MS Facility

  • The School of Earth and Ocean Science's ICP-MS and Laser Ablation facility is equipped with two quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Mass Spectrometers (Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole (ICP-MS/MS, and Thermo X-Series 2 ICP-MS), a laser ablation system (UP-213), and various liquid sample introduction systems.
  • Our sample preparation facilities include three metal free clean rooms (two class 100, one class 1000), plus a large conventional wet lab. These labs are equipped with polypropylene class 100 total exhaust fume hoods for sample preparation in a metal free clean environment.
  • The facility is available for elemental analysis of a wide range of solid and liquid materials. Typical samples include fresh water, seawater, geological samples, environmental samples, soils, sediments, biological materials (otoliths, hair, claws), and synthetic materials.
  • Any researcher with an interest in using the facilities is encouraged to contact the lab manager (Dr. Jody Spence; icpmslab@uvic.ca) to discuss potential analytical projects. Innovative or unusual applications are welcomed.
