Teaching:
My teaching interests involve an analytic approach to earth and ocean sciences. Courses I have taught include:
- EOS 370 Earthquakes, Natural Hazards, Plate Tectonics
- EOS 410 Global Tectonics
- EOS 516 Ocean Acoustics
- EOS 526 Geophysical Inverse Theory
- PHYS 210 Introductory Geophysics
- PHYS 411 Time Series Analysis
- PHYS 420 Topics in Mathematical Physics
- PHYS 431 Continuum Mechanics

Research:
My research involves determining physical properties of ocean environments and  their effect on acoustic propagation. This involves acoustic and seismo-acoustic  measurements (at sea and in the Arctic), geophysical inverse theory, acoustic signal  processing, and wave propagation modelling.
Specific research projects include:

  • Comparison of acoustic matched-field inversion and seismic inversion for  geoacoustic properties nearSable Island NS (with Mark Fallat and Ross Chapman,  UVic, and David Chapman and Garry Heard, DREA).
  • New approaches to modal decomposition and matched mode processing for acoustic  inverse problems (with Nicole Collison, UVic).
  • Project Spinnaker and the Iceshelf research program (joint NRaD/DREA  research program involving the long-term deployment of a 3-D sensor array  in the Arctic Ocean). Specifically, array element localization and geoacoustic  measurements at the array site (with Barbara Sotirin, NRaD, and Ron Verrall, DREA).
  • Development/testing of air-deployable acoustic sensors for ice-covered waters   based on 3-component geophones (with Ron Verrall, DREA, and Richard Van Der Pryt, MAG).
