Ocean Acoustics Program at SEOS
University of Victoria

Ocean Acoustics is an interdisciplinary field of research, with strong links to many areas of ocean science, geoscience and marine engineering. The ocean is essentially transparent to acoustic waves b ut opaque to electromagnetic waves; consequently, sound in the ocean assumes the major role that light and radio waves play in the atmosphere. Acoustic methods have found wide application in studying the oceanographic properties of the water colum n, the sea floor and geoacoustic properties of the bottom, marine communication and navigation, to name only a few. The Ocean A coustics program at UVic was established as an NSERC/DND Research Chair in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Resea rch activities are currently focused on the investigation of seismo-acoustic propagation in shallow water, and in the de velopment and application of full-field inversion methods to estimate geoacoustic properties of the ocean waveguide environmen t. The Ocean Acoustics group maintains an effective collaboration with the Environmental Acoustics group at the Defenc e Research Establishment Atlantic in experimental programs that are carried out in the Canadian Arctic and on the continental shelf off the east coast. The Group also collaborates extensively with the Pacific Geoscience Centre in sea trials offshore Vancou ver Island, particularly in the investigation of methane gas hydrates.
