Comma Splice

Rule

Don't put just a comma between two main clauses; that will create a comma splice.

Test

What is on both sides of the comma can stand by themselves and make complete sense

THEN

Use a semicolon to join them
OR

Add a coordinating conjunction after the comma
OR

Use a period
OR

Make one clause dependent on the other.

Examples of Comma Splices

Security officers are unable to monitor these areas frequently, therefore, alternative safety measures should be considered.
The shipment was delayed by several months, the customers became very angry.
