Connect U, the first all-staff conference

The first Connect U all-staff conference attracted over 500 participants to a multitude of professional development sessions in the Cadboro Commons Building on June 1 and 2. Even before it started, the event engaged 120 staff in its design and delivery.

This new professional development opportunity promoted skill development, knowledge transfer, workplace efficiency and networking opportunities across campus.

"The support and enthusiasm for the Connect U conference was overwhelming. It was a fantastic opportunity for staff to explore the campus through multiple tours, develop leadership skills and understand more fully the roles of research, external relations and our strategic planning process," says conference chair Janice Johnson. “The feedback is so positive that we are looking at hosting another conference in 2013.”

All sessions were held in the Cadboro Commons building and were free and open to all UVic staff.

Sustainability awards

The first-ever UVic sustainability awards were presented at the Connect U networking reception on June 2 at the University Club. The awards highlight staff initiatives in greening their workplace and contributing to the university's sustainability goals.

Heather Seymour, the manager of food production and purchasing for University Food Services, was the recipient of UVic's first Sustainability Champion Award. Two Sustainability Action Teams (SATs) were also honoured for their achievements over a three-month period to conserve energy, reduce waste and promote sustainable transportation choices in their buildings. The Fraser Building team won in the category of waste reduction, and the Business and Economics Building team won for energy conservation. See Ring article for full details and photos:
