What does the JMCE do?
First: the JMCE will sponsor the offering of a new 100 level - first year university student - course in European Culture and Politics. Our goal is to reach as least 40-80 students per year. This course is of majjor interest to the European Studies Program, and the four faculties and 17 departments that partner and support EUS, and the University of Victoria. To date, the European Studies Program only offered courses at the 300 level, as well as electives at 200 and 300 levels offered across 17 departments in four faculties. By introducing this entry level course, the programme will offer something thus far not existing. Such a course will contribute to the University high quality teaching and internationalization agendas. This entry level course will offer a new element to our European Studies Program by introducing students to the EU as soon as university starts rather than, as now, wait till third year.
Second: the JMCE will organise an annual European Studies Graduate Student Conference showcasing their research work to the local and regional business elite of the Capital Region of British Columbia. Scholars and students will participate. Student research will be facilitaded by travel grants. (see below)
This annual event will be the flagship event of the year for our program to showcase what our graduate students do and to showcase what the European Union is doing that can be an inspiration for the world. Our goal is a one day conference, which will bring together graduate students, researchers and professionals, in the fall each year.
Third: Graduate student grant / Study Tour grant: Competitive JMCE grants are incentive to study issues that are relevant in Victoria, British Columbia, and to engage with other students and the greater public in the capital region of Victoria. Your participation to the European Studies Graduate Student Conference is a requirement for all JMCE grantees to showcase research results to other students and the greater public.
