European Union Centre of Excellence - Conference on Security's Impact on Border Policies and High School Outreach
EUCE - Security's Impact on Border Policiesand High School Outreach, March 2012
On March 30th and 31st of 2012 we will be hosting a 2 day workshop with special guests from around the world to present and discuss their work on Borders. This event will be hosted at the Laurel Point Inn, and it is for guests only. The guests are high level specialists on the subjects being presented from different parts of the world.
The conference will follow a one day hands-on minds-on event for High School students who will be exposed to topics such as Borders security, relations between countries and European Studies.
For this day (March 29th) Postponed we will need undergraduate and graduate students/volunteers who have knowledge of the topics to guide high school students in their research and presentation. High School students will receive a certificate of participation and prizes.
We are very excited for both events to come!

I-Witness Holocaust Field School - Call for applications

I-WITNESS HOLOCAUST FIELD SCHOOL

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer a new and life-changing course.
In May of 2012, Dr. Charlotte Schallie and the Associate Program Director, Michael Gans, will lead a group of 20 students to Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The purpose of the Field School is to explore the ways in which the Holocaust has become memorialized in Central Europe and to build an understanding of how the lessons of the Holocaust are relevant in today’s world.
Students in this 3 unit, 400-level course will have the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of antisemitism, racism, religious intolerance, homophobia and the stigmatization of the mentally and physically disabled communities. It is the only program of this nature offered by a university in Western Canada.

EU-Canada Young Journalist Award - Call for applications
2012 EU-CANADA YOUNG JOURNALIST AWARD

The EU Delegation to Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 EU-Canada Young Journalist Award.
The EU-Canada Young Journalist Award was created in 2001 to recognize outstanding journalistic potential among Canadian students. Each year, three students are selected to participate in a one-week study tour of various EU institutions and the Canadian Mission to the EU in Brussels. Winners will also have the chance to attend a Midday EU press briefing. Prior to the trip, which is paid for by the European Union, winners will be invited to an awards ceremony in Ottawa in May 2012, an event attended by senior journalists, government officials and the diplomatic corps.
The Award is open to students in all Canadian universities and higher education establishments. Applicants are invited to make a submission focusing on current issues facing the European Union or EU-Canada relations.

Whether the Euro will survive the current crisis or not – the Jean Monnet Chair, Professor Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly, is offering a course in European Union Regional Policy, as a "Special Topic in Public Policy' – ADMN 548. This is an online course with weekly meetings on Moodles and 4 video conferences/tutorials at the School of Public Administration. The course is taught in comparative perspective with Canada and allows you to learn and compare urban and regional policies both in Canada and Europe.

GERS433: "Overcoming the Past": Film and Text
This course examines the Holocaust and its impact on subsequent generations through the lens of literature, film and art. Exemplary texts, documentaries and feature films probing the limits of representation will challenge students to reconsider their own assumptions and historical knowledge. As we move from eyewitness accounts to the after-images of the Holocaust, we will explore the deeply unsettling spaces of memory inhabited by Second and Third Generation writers, filmmakers and visual artists.

This team-taught course gives and introduction to the logic of European integration. It takes a number of disciplinary perspectives: political, economic and legal dimensions. Students will learn key concepts, theories of integration and how the process of policy-making and governance work in the European Union. Professors who teach in this class are from the Departments of Economics and Political Science, the School of Public Administration and the Faculty of Law.

HA382B: Native North American Arts: Southwest, California, and Great Britain

HA 382B offers an introduction to North American visual arts of the indigenous peoples of the Southwest, California, and Great Basin, from the earliest known art works to the present. It explores diversity of art forms and cultural styles; cultural contexts; relationships between artistic expression and environment; reflection of spirituality and philosophy in art; indigenous responses to contact with non-native peoples; and contemporary artistic activities. The course emphasizes the importance of appreciating indigenous philosophies as we address the global challenges facing the world today.

NEW EUS 100 COURSE - FALL 2012
European Studies is now available at the 100 course level. It is an introduction to European Studies and it is coming out very promissing. This course is also part of our Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence curriculum.

On June 7th2012, UVIc's European Studies Program and European Centre of Excellence will host a one day minds-on hands-on event for high school students, where they will be able to interact with specialists in Borders and familiarize with European Studies.
