Dr. Valerie Kuehne

(photo: Valerie Kuene)Dr. Valerie Kuehne was appointed vice-president external relations at the University of Victoria on December 1, 2005. She previously served as UVic's associate vice-president academic planning from 2000 – 2005, and in that role led planning of the Island Medical Program and other new teaching and research initiatives across the university. Her performance earned her a 97 per cent approval rating from faculty when she was appointed to a second term.

Dr. Kuehne's selection as vice-president of the division of external relations resulted from her recognized skill in integrating the division more closely with the core mandate of the university in support of UVic's exceptional academic and research programs.

The external relations portfolio includes alumni relations, external awards facilitation, fundraising, government relations, university communications and marketing, community relations, ceremonies and events, corporate relations, and the university auditorium and art collections.

Dr. Kuehne is an internationally respected researcher in the area of intergenerational relations and is a frequent speaker at national, international and scholarly meetings. Prior to joining UVic's school of child and youth care in 1990, she earned her BSc in nursing from the University of Alberta, a master's in child development from Loyola University and a PhD in human development and social policy from Northwestern University in Chicago. She was also a pediatric nurse and nursing instructor in Edmonton.
