* Space permitting, first year students may take the above Child and Youth Care courses without being admitted to the CYC degree program.  These are core CYC courses and if completed with C+ or better will count toward the BCYC for successful applicants to the School of Child and Youth Care.
** CYC 140 is an acceptable substitute for 1.5 units of ENGL

Do you give credit for certificate and diplomas from other institutions?

Yes, we recognize human service certificates and diplomas from accredited institutions (programs with vocational or continuing studies designations are not included). Certificate/diplomas completed with an overall B average may be eligible for block credit of 15 units for a certificate or 30 units for a diploma upon admission to the CYC degree program.

The CYC degree program will take four years of full-time study to complete.

If you are interested in pursuing a degree in Child and Youth Care, getting some paid or voluntary experience is very valuable. To learn more about child and youth care we encourage you to register in CYC 100A and 100B – Introduction to Professional Child and Youth Care Practice Part One and Two. These courses are offered from September – April and can be taken during your first year.

The full application package is on the Child and Youth Care website: www.uvic.ca/cyc. The application deadline is February 28.

Yes, you may take courses in any faculty if you have the prerequisites. We encourage students to take courses from a wide range of disciplines and often CYC students have a minor in another program.

Can a CYC degree qualify me to enter the Teacher Certificate Training Program?

Can a CYC degree qualify me to enter the Teacher Certificate Training Program?

A CYC degree is an asset to practicing teachers. However, it is important to ensure that you complete foundational subjects, such as math, language arts and/or a lab science. Please consult an adviser from the Education Faculty for more information.

May I take my complete degree online? ANSWER: You may complete all but one ten-day lab online through distance education. Note that some online courses require real-time attendance, a web-camera and sound-isolating head-sets.
