Faculty of Fine Arts
The universal language
Among all post-secondary institutions in BC, the University of Victoria has the only dedicated Faculty of Fine Arts. The faculty’s disciplines include music, theatre, visual arts, writing and history in art; their close proximity fosters interdisciplinary productions. Faculty members include award winning and internationally renowned writers, visual artists, playwrights, scholars and musicians. UVic graduates in the fine arts have received prestigious awards to pursue advanced studies in North America and Europe and many find full-time work in their field.
Of all struggling students, the artist is the epitome. Simply for the love of their art, gifted people are often required to make extraordinary sacrifices. Their discipline requires extra purchases – instruments, canvases, paints, scores. Their pursuit of excellence often requires travel to study the roots of cultural achievements. Even their opportunities to earn part-time income are limited, given the time they must set aside for extra practice, rehearsals, performances and creative work. Fine arts students need support—to know the public values their efforts, their dedication, their sacrifices and awaits their creative contributions with eagerness and gratitude. Arts supporters can show their gratitude now, when students need it most, by helping to fund their education and apprenticeship.
An appreciation and love of the arts inspires thoughtful citizens to “give back” in gratitude for the joy, solace, inspiration and beauty they experience. Fine Arts priorities include acquiring new musical instruments, and launching interdisciplinary programs in media technologies. The faculty also plans to recruit more visiting artists and establish chairs in areas such as cultural resources management and creative writing.
