Faculty of Law
Passion for justice
Our global society demands the broadest range of talents and backgrounds in the legal profession. We need to seek out differences and welcome them.
UVic Law is consistently ranked as one of the finest law schools in Canada, and is widely respected for its commitment to excellence and a supportive learning environment. UVic Law is recognized for its academic strengths in many areas, including environmental law, Indigenous legal issues, legal theory, public law and comparative constitutional law. The school’s support of Indigenous initiatives includes Canada’s only professorship in Aboriginal Justice and Governance and a new National Chair in Aboriginal Economic Development.
With three law clinics and the only nationally accredited common law co-operative education program in Canada, the faculty provides students with exceptional hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to make valuable contributions to the larger community. In addition, it offers a unique summer program that focuses on issues of national and international significance. UVic Law attracts applicants from around the world and its faculty and students participate in exchanges with law schools in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and the United States. The comprehensive range of courses offered by UVic Law allows its graduates to pursue rewarding careers in a broad range of legal practice and law-related work.
One of UVic Law’s priorities is to increase the value of scholarships and bursaries that it provides to students. With the support of alumni and others, the faculty is committed to recruiting the best students from a broad range of social, ethnic and educational backgrounds. This approach will maintain and strengthen the quality of its programs, both by ensuring high academic standards and by fostering a diverse and stimulating learning environment. Competitive awards will attract the most promising students, increase the diversity of the student body and, ultimately, add diversity to the legal profession.
