Faculty of Science
Dr. Kim Venn holds the Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics. She uses large telescopes and light-separating instruments to analyze the chemical composition of stars to study galaxy formation and evolution.
Science matters
The faculty is a hub of intellectual talent in which we are exploring the universe and pursuing solutions to global challenges.
Scientists at the University of Victoria represent a collection of outstanding researchers who are working to advance medicine, find solutions to climate change, produce energy, enhance information processing and improve environmental stewardship – the list is long and touches all aspects of our lives. UVic scientists have received accolades internationally in fields such as climate change, ocean science, genomics and proteomics, particle physics, astronomy, and computational sciences. Our earth and ocean scientists and astronomers are rated among the very best in Canada. For students, this research-rich environment provides a hotbed of inspiration.
Science at UVic is set to expand. After years of working in cramped facilities, UVic scientists and students will soon move into a new building with the space they need to weave disciplinary threads into an interdisciplinary tapestry of understanding. The new Science Building will house a state-of-the-art astronomy observatory that will allow our astronomers and their students to explore myriad elements of the universe. We must now equip the observatory with a powerful new telescope to replace an outdated 40-year-old instrument. A sophisticated telescope comes at a high price. The faculty seeks the support of visionary donors who recognize the advantage that the provision of new eyes on the cosmos will confer on our students.
Canada’s future is rooted in application of knowledge. The faculty seeks support for awards and graduate fellowships that will help this nation meet future knowledge demand. Support is also sought for endowed chairs and professorships that will allow us to continue to attract the best and ensure that UVic Science will remain an outstanding nexus for research and teaching.
