UVic Retirement Information

MANDATORY RETIREMENT ENDS - Effective January 1, 2008, the provincial government implemented changes to the BC Human Rights Code with the effect that Mandatory retirement policIes are now considered age discrimination under the code. The effect of this change has been to eliminate mandatory retirement.

With reference to your terms and conditions of employment with the University, this means that you are no longer required to retire at age 65 (normal retirement date).

All Employees

The following benefits will continue unchanged should you choose to work past the normal retirement date:

  • MSP
  • Dental Plan
  • Extended Health
  • Pension Plan
  • Optional Life Insurance
  • Sick Leave


The following benefits will change once an employee reaches age 65:

  • Long Term Disability Benefit (LTD) eligibility and coverage will cease
  • Group Life Insurance will be reduced from 1.5x earnings to 1.0x earnings.

 

Please note that all benefit coverage will cease on the date (age 71) that you must, by law, begin to draw a pension.
