Effective Workplace Relations (EWR) Certificate

As an employee it can sometimes be a challenge to balance the need to be effective and efficient in your job duties while maintaining effective workplace relations.  This program is designed to provide you with the core competencies you need to work effectively with others thus ensuring excellence in your workplace performance and at the same time developing you career potential.

Who can participate:  This learning is appropriate for all staff at all levels.

Stepping up to Supervision (SU2S)

Some of us aspire to be supervisors and some of us come by the supervisory role by accident.  The Stepping up to Supervisor program has been designed to give new or aspiring supervisors with some first steps. 

This program is designed to provide you with key skills you need to for successful supervision.

Who can participate:  This learning is appropriate for staff  who are new to or aspiring to a supervisory role.

Supervising for Success (S4S)

As a supervisor it can be a daunting task to juggle the demands from staff with operational requirements. You can feel caught in the middle.  This program is designed to provide you with the skills you need to successful supervise and lead your team for optimal results — skills that can make your job easier and help your team succeed.


Who can participate:  This learning is appropriate for those currently in CUPE supervisory roles.

Managing for Results (M4R)

As a manager and leader it can sometimes be overwhelming to juggle the demands from staff with the operational results and organizational needs. You can feel caught in the middle. This program is designed to provide you with the skills you need to lead and manage for indivdiual and organizational results - skills that can make your job easier and help your team succeed.


Who can participate:  This learning is appropriate for those currently in management or leadership roles (ME, PEA supervisors, Librarian Managers, Chairs and Deans).

Application and Assessment Process

Certificate Information: Certificates in each series will be granted by Human Resources after completion of all of the required courses plus 14 hours of program appropriate electives and the assessment process described below.

Application Process:  To be eligible for the certificate you must complete the application form and register with Human Resources indicating your intention to complete the certificate program. We estimate it will take at least two years and as long as four years to complete the program.

Note: If you have taken any of the HR sponsored required or elective courses since 2004 you will be given credit towards your certificate.

Assessment Process: 8- to -10 page reflective paper; what you learned and how you applied the learning in your work at UVic. A certificate will be granted by Human Resources once the paper has been reviewed and approved.

Graduation: Graduation ceremonies will be held once 20 people have completed the program and received their certificates.

Transfer Credit in the Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) Program: The Effective Workplace Relations Certificate Program has been approved to receive 2.0 elective credits in CACE (April 2007). CACE is an exciting professional development program offered through Continuing Studies in Education for people responsible for helping adults learn. Emphasis is on the translation of theory and knowledge into skilled practice.


Transfer Credit in the Certificate in Business Administration Program (CBA): The Effective Workplace Relations Certificate Program has been approved to receive transfer credit for 1.0 course (Special Topics) in the CBA offered by Business, Management and Technology Programs in the UVic's Division of Continuing Studies. The CBA enables learners to deepen their knowledge in the field of business administration.
