e to ie stem-changing verbs

Spanish verbs that have a stressed "e" as the last stem vowel in the infinitive form change to "ie" in the conjugated form. Preferir (to prefer) and querer (to want) are good examples.

Attention:
All verb forms change in the stem except nosotros and vosotros, which do not have stem vowels that are stressed. In these forms, the ending not the stem is stressed.

  • Attention: Some very common stem-changing verbs are used together with the infinitive of a second verb.

  • Yo prefiero comer ahora.
       I prefer to eat now.
  • Ella quiere jugar también.
       She wants to play too.
