e to i stem-changing verbs

Some -ir verbs undergo a stem change in the present tense. If the verb has a stressed "e" as the last stem vowel, it changes to "i". Pedir (to ask for, order) and decir (to speak) are good examples.

  • vosotros pedís
  • Attention:
There are a number of other common verbs that undergo this change.

  • servir - to serve
  • conseguir - to get, obtain
  • seguir - to follow, continue
  • perseguir - to pursue
  • Attention:
The verbs decir, seguir, conseguir and perseguir have an irregular first person singular (yo) form. For each verb, the first person conjugation ends in -go.

  • yo digo
  • yo consigo
  • yo sigo
  • yo persigo
