The intentions of this research project are:
You'll need modern browsers in order to view this site. Firefox, Safari, WebKit and Midori all work well, and Opera will display the trees, but seems to have a small sizing bug. Internet Explorer is no use, because it has no support for SVG.
This text is the first five paragraphs of King Alfred's record of Ohthere's tale of his voyage to the north along the Norwegian coast to the White Sea region. The voyage took place around 890, and is the first known voyage around the North Cape. Ohthere (Ottar) was a viking trader.
Alfred included the story in his world history, The Old English Orosius, which mainly consists of a translation of the writings of the Spanish cleric and historian Paulus Orosius, dating from around 400 AD.
This was an interactive diagram of the markup and rendering procedure. Unfortuantely, to see this diagram, the Adobe SVG Plugin was required, and this is no longer available. Never mind.
These are links to the marked-up paragraphs, rendered interactive for student use. If you have Firefox, Safari, Midori or IE, you can use the XML link, which loads the original XML document and renders it "on the fly" in your browser; if you have a different browser, use the HTML version, which is already rendered and saved as HTML.
This section enables you to view the markup rendered as syntax trees using Scalable Vector Graphics. To view this page, you will need Firefox, Safari, Webkit or Midori. All the syntax tree diagrams are based on the first paragraph of the text.
