Martyr or Misfit? Re-examining Archbishop Seghers’ Great Adventure and Tragic Death
    David Kingma, Gongaza University

Followers of Archbishop Charles Seghers’ quest to establish Catholicism in Alaska were rewarded with a vivid firsthand account of his travels in the December 23, 1886 issue of Portland’s Catholic Sentinel. As classic 19th-century adventure the tale lacked nothing—Indian troubles, charging bears, churning rapids, all faced with indomitable will and good-humoured camaraderie. Sentinel readers that day could not have known, however, that their revered bishop was then nearly a month deceased, murdered by his own hand-picked companion.  Drawn from unpublished historical sources, this presentation will apply a contemporary lens to this story of authentic heroism and its aftermath.

The lecture will be followed by a viewing of selected rare editions from the Seghers Library, housed at UVic Libraries Special Collections.

David Kingma received his M.A. in history and archives management in 1993 from Western Washington University, Bellingham. Since 1994, he has served as administrator of the Jesuit Oregon Province Archives housed at the Foley Center Library at Gonzaga University, Spokane. David’s principal research interest has been the role played by Rev. Joseph Cataldo, S. J., in the religious history of the Pacific Northwest. That focus has broadened in recent years to include the missionary history of Alaska.

This is a keynote lecture for the Catholic Legacies in Victoria Community Seminar.

  • CSRS Public Lecture - The Bishop's Books: The Seghers Collection at the University of Victoria

Centre for Studies in Religion and Society Public Lecture

The Bishop’s Books: The Seghers Collection at the University of Victoria

Dr. Hélène Cazes, University of Victoria
    Department of French

From Ghent, Belgium, to the American College in Louvain (founded in 1857 for the training of missionaries leaving for the Pacific Northwest), to Victoria and onward to Yukon and Alaska, the travels of Charles John Seghers (bishop of Victoria from 1873 to 1886) tell the story of heroic dreams of evangelization, journeys to the extremities of the world, the birth of Canada, and struggles for the Catholic school system, ending tragically in death from a shotgun during the winter of 1886 somewhere between Alaska and Yukon.

Leaving aside the larger story of Segher’s legacy in the establishment of missions in Alaska and Yukon, the lecture will focus on the unique and extensive library of rare books he left behind, currently held at University of Victoria Libraries’ Special Collections. Some 3,500 volumes published before 1886 (5,000 in total including later acquisitions and donations) are whispering the name of the illustrious bishop in the vaults of the UVic library. Which books are these? Where do they come from? Which layered stories and memories do they hold?

Hélène Cazes studies cultural legacies and transmission, notably the history of the book and humanism. Trained in France at École Normale Supérieure, Paris-Sorbonne, Paris Ouest-Nanterre, she teaches in the UVic Department of French, where she coordinates the Humanities Diploma Program with UVic Continuing Studies and the Medieval Studies Program. With the support of librarians at the Mearns Centre for Learning, she has been actively engaged in the study of UVic Special Collections in the past few years and has organized seminars and workshops to make these resources better known and more accessible for the Victoria and Canadian communities.

Center for Studies in Religion and Society Conférence

  • "La mia Italia", A piano recital by Cristiana Pegoraro

To celebrate the 2013 Conference of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies, the Consulate General of Italy, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies of the University of Victoria, organizes a special concert by acclaimed Italian pianist Cristiana Pegoraro.

Pegoraro started her career as a pianist at a very early age, devoting the years of her artistic development to perfecting her technique and developing her execution of the works of the great composers.

She quickly established herself on the international stage as a classical pianist, but her passion, personality and creativity pushed her beyond classical music, resulting in her being recognized by critics as one of the best interpreters of music by Latin American composers, as well as one of the most interesting composers of the newer generation.

She won the Best of the Year Classical Music Award in Prague.  The New York Times defines her as "an artist of the highest caliber" following her stunning debut at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall.
