The Phil Peterson Memorial Scholarship- Phil Peterson was an urban First Nations person from Victoria who worked to hire Aboriginal youth from BC's foster care system at the Department of National Defense so that they could, in his words, "have a good life too". The UVic School of Social Work is collecting donations in the aim of raising $25,000 to endow to the Phil Peterson Scholarship so that financial awards can be given out to assist First Nations students and keep Phil's spirit alive. Donations can be made directly to UVic. All donations over $20 are tax deductible.

Workshops, Training and Conferences

SAMHSA Internship Program - a newly launched internship designed to attract college students from populations typically underrepresented in the behavioral health field. The 10-week Fall session runs from October 31, 2011 – January 6, 2012!

Scholarship and Grant Opportunities

National Aboriginal Achievement Awards: Aboriginal Health Careers - NAAF’s Education Program disburses approximately $3 million a year to First Nations, Inuit and Métis students across Canada. NAAF bursaries cover a comprehensive array of disciplines in three funding categories: Fine Arts and Professional Development including Cultural Projects; Health Careers; and Post Secondary Education. Deadline: November 1, 2011.

Elizabeth Hill Chee­Meegwetch Endowment Fund
Funds are available to enhance the education and professional development of First Nations social work students at the University of Victoria.
Deadline: November 30th.

Doctoral Dissertation Grant Program - Grants of up to $5,000 are available to help support dissertation expenses of doctoral students in the United States and Canada whose studies have the potential for adding significantly to knowledge about problems in the functioning or well being of children,adults, couples, families, or communities, or about interventions designed to prevent or alleviate such problems. Deadline: November 1, 2011

Vanier Canadian Graduate Scholarships: Open to Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program attracts and retains world-class doctoral students and helps establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Candidates cannot apply directly. They must be nominated by the university at which they want to study. The awards are valued at $50,000/year for three years. Deadline: November 9, 2011

Traditional Fulbright Student Awards - These awards are intended for graduate students, prospective graduate students and junior professionals who wish to enroll in a graduate studies program, continue their current course of graduate study and research, or pursue an independent research project for a period of nine months in the United States. All awards are subject to available funding, approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), and compliance with FSB guidelines. Deadline: November 15, 2011 

SSHRC Public Outreach Grants: Workshops and Conferences - Knowledge mobilization is a core priority for SSHRC, one aimed at facilitating and enabling the movement of knowledge in the social sciences and humanities to and from various sectors of society in order to inform Canadian and international debate, decisions and actions. SSHRC actively supports connecting, disseminating, exchanging and co-creating knowledge to meet the needs of society. The aim is to ensure that people who stand to benefit from research results (e.g., policy-makers, business leaders, community leaders, educators, and members of the media, as well as academics in various fields) have the knowledge they need, when they need it, in useful forms. Deadline: November 28, 2011 

New Relationship Trust Youth Grants - Youth Grant funding is available to First Nation youth groups and organizations in BC. NRT allocated $250,000 for Youth Grants in 2011-2012. A maximum of $2,500 is available per project to assist BC First Nation youth in their communities. Priority is given to groups and projects that demonstrate capacity building, leadership or mentorship for First Nation youth. New Relationship Trust is issuing a second call for Youth Grant applications for 2011-2012.  If you HAVE NOT already received funding this fiscal year for your BC First Nation youth group, then you may be eligible to apply. We will be awarding Youth Grants until funds are exhausted on a first come - first served basis, so we suggest you apply as soon as possible.

The British Columbia First Nations Environmental Contaminants Program (BCFNECP) is now accepting Environmental Contaminants Research Proposals for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The goal of this program is to support community research that explores the link between human health and environmental contaminants, and recognizes the need of First Nations to exercise a leadership role.
Proposals for projects taking place between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. Proposals must be received no later than November 30, 2011.

The Keepers of the Earth Fund - The Keepers of the Earth Fund provides access to funding for Indigenous communities to support Indigenous-led projects that create greater Indigenous control of Indigenous assets. The fund is geared towards strategies that address culturally appropriate Indigenous development (e.g., land use and conservation, traditional decision-making, climate change, food security, etc.).
