Frequently Asked Questions:
Who is considered to be an Elder?
Age is not the only determining factor in deciding whether someone is an Elder. A younger person may be considered an Elder-in-Training if they have spent a lot of time with their grandparents and Elders learning the traditional cultural ways.
How do I address an Elder?
Most Elders prefer to be called by their first name, while others like to be called by their ancestral name. Ask the Elder you are working with what name they would to be addressed by. A word of caution if you choose to use their ancestral name, please make sure you are clear on how to pronounce it properly, if you don't think you can say it don't use it.
What/Whose territory is UVic situated on?
UVic is situated on the territory of the Coast and Straits Salish people. The university sits on the site of an old Lekwungen village. If you look around, you will see the remnants of an old Garry Oak Ecosystem indicating the presence of camas fields on this land.
How do I contact an Elder?
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday's at the First Peoples House from 10 -3 pm there is an Elder-in-Residence available to speak with you and answer questions. On the days when an Elder is not available you can contact Deb George at the Office of Indigenous Affairs who will be able to connect you with the an Elder.
Is there a set rate of pay for a visiting Elder?
In the terms of reference set by Elders' Voices the suggested rate of pay is $50 per hour or any portion of an hour. Please note this is only a suggested rate of pay: if you are unable to provide this rate please discuss it with the Elder.
If I am providing an honorarium for an Elders, do I also need to present a gift?
If you are providing an honorarium, it is not always necessary to also offer a gift.
Who do I contact if I have questions about Elders' Voices?
