Partnering Process

When formalizing a University/Industry research collaboration with the University of Victoria there are typically two primary groups which are involved:  UVic Industry Partnerships (UVic IP) and the Office of Research Services (ORS).  If you have not worked with the University before, UVic IP should be your first point of contact.   If our team is not the correct group to complete the transaction in question we will promptly refer the file out to the appropriate group within the University.

The following table provides an outline of the functions of UVic IP and ORS:

Supporting Industry Connections

 

  • Promotion of UVic Research including Technology, Professors, Laboratories, and Centres;
  • Matching industry needs with UVic technology, research expertise and relationship structure (e.g. license, CRA, Services Agreement etc.);
  • Identification of programs to leverage research funding and to maximize value to industrial sponsor (e.g. R&D investment programs  such as the Industrial Regional Benefits or IRB Program);
  • Support for grants requiring UILO participation, i.e. I2I Grants, Engage,  POP,  etc.
  • Support for contracts covering industrially sponsored research (negotiation, drafting, review) subject to final direction and approval of ORS.

 

Intellectual Property Protection & Management

 

  • Manage and administer IP disclosure review process in support of UVic’s IP policy and contractual obligations;
  • Manage and administer UVic’s compliance with contractual obligations with respect to IP disclosed;
  • Management of UVic’s patent portfolio;
  • Support for non-commercial IP licensing and transfer required by ORS or other UVic members; and
  • Support for ORS in reviewing IP terms and agreements in support of non-industry sponsored research, academic collaborations and grant funded research such as NSERC CRDs and Network Agreements.

 

Intellectual Property Commercialization

 

  • Negotiation, drafting and approval and management of IP Agreements in support of commercialization activities, i.e. NDAs, licenses, options, assignments and MTAs;
  • Market Analysis;
  • Technology marketing; and
  • Royalty management and disbursements; and
  • UVic Liaison with Greater Victoria Accelerator Centre for Spin-off Companies
