Work study jobs 2015

Two Work / Study positions are currently available for UVic Students: 1) Editorial Assistant, and 2) Marketing / Promotions Assistant. In order to apply for these positions, you must first demonstrate financial need by applying through UVic's Work Study webpage (Student Awards and Financial Aid). Once approved, you can apply for these jobs.

Both positions run from September 2015 to April 2016.

JOB TITLEEditorial Assistant

DEPARTMENT NAME:  Malahat Review

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assist the Malahat’s staff with a variety of tasks, including:

  • screen submissions received on Submittable in three genres (poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction) prior to their being assigned to editorial board members;
  • other related duties, as time permits.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must be able to critically assess poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction; have excellent computer skills; be familiar with Word and Excel, and a strong interest in and/or knowledge of contemporary writing, especially Canadian literature. An excellent command of English is required. An undergraduate or graduate Writing student is preferred.

JOB TITLE: Marketing and Promotions Assistant

DEPARTMENT NAME: Malahat Review

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assist the Malahat’s staff with marketing and promoting the magazine, including:

  • Recruit, place, and track paid print advertising for each of the four annual issues
  • Recruit, place, and track exchange advertising for each of the four annual issues;
  • Maintain relationships with existing print paid and exchange advertisers
  • Contact publishers of the books reviewed in each issue to recruit paid print advertising
  • Attract new print paid exchange advertisers (e.g., from writing programs across Canada and elsewhere)
  • Help with the organization of WordsThaw, Malahat’s annual spring symposium
    • Create content for symposium’s WordPress site, e.g.,inteviews with participants
    • distribute posters and bookmarks on campus and to cafes and bookstores around Victoria
    • contact publishing houses to request copies of author books for door prizes;
    • work WordsThaw events, including WordsThaw and its prequels;
    • Other related duties, as time permits, including help with proofreading and other editorial tasks


    QUALIFICATIONS

    The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of current social media tools and will be conversant with Windows-based Word, Excel and WordPress. Outreach skills, including proper email and social-media etiquette, are an asset. A thorough command of English is required. An undergraduate or graduate Writing or English student (especially a student from either department who’s taken Professional Writing courses) is preferred.
