2023 Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction winner: Eleanor Fuller

Congratulations to Eleanor Fuller, who has won this year's $1,250 Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction! Her story, "The Hennessy Family Rosary," was chosen by final judge Susan Sanford Blades and is set to be published in our fall issue #224.

The Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction celebrates the achievement of emerging writers who have yet to publish their fiction in book form.

Here's what judge Susan Sanford Blades had to say about Eleanor's winning story: "This story drew me in immediately with its strong voice. The author’s word choices and descriptions are sticky with sarcasm, humour and characterization, but also with deeper meaning. This is a story that plays out just as much between its lines as it does on the page, and rewards subsequent readings. I was also impressed by the story’s pacing. We dive into its messy heart at the very beginning and, with its shifting perspectives, are then sifted through the many layers of female responsibility and pain that pinball between the members of this family."

 

Eleanor Fuller's fiction appears in The Moth, The Manchester Review, The New Quarterly, and The Antigonish Review. An MFA candidate at the University of British Columbia, she volunteers on the Editorial Board at Prism International and is currently at work on a SSHRC-supported collection of short stories. She lives in Toronto.

Susan Sanford Blades lives on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking people; the Xwsepsum/Kosapsum and Songhees Nations (Victoria, BC). Her debut novel, Fake It So Real, won the 2021 ReLit Award in the novel category and was a finalist for the 2021 BC and Yukon Book Prizes Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Her short fiction has been anthologized in The Journey Prize Reader: The Best of Canada's New Writers and has been published in literary magazines across Canada as well as in the United States and Ireland. Her fiction has most recently been published in The Malahat Review and Gulf Coast.
