Other Opportunities for Students
Cudamani Summer Institute will run July 3- July 23, 2011.
Information and applications are available online.
The program is a highly intensive learning environment where students study Balinese gamelan or Balinese dance from 9 am to 4 pm, 5 days a week for three weeks. Additional observation of Cudamani's incredible rehearsal process and weekend outings to see performances and special events allow one to learn by listening, watching and experiencing, in addition to the detailed and energetic 'class' experience.
The program immerses you into the deeply connected network of Cudamani's artists, playing and dancing alongside accomplished artists whose deep love of dance and pure joy in music are nothing short of infectious. It's an experience totally different from studying privately.
Examples of highlights from previous years:
- Guest lectures by experts such as Bapak I Wayan Dibia, Ibu Ni Made Wiratini, Garrett Kam.
- Demonstrations and discussion with master artists such as Bapak I Made Arnawa (contemporary gamelan from Gamelan Pendro, Tunjuk), Ibu Sekar (Gambuh Batuan), Bapak I Ketut Buda (Gender Wayang Sukawati), Bapak Juanda (Wayang Kulit Sukawati).
- Master Classes taught by Bapak Ida Bagus Oka (Mask making), Bapak I Ketut Wirtawan (Gambuh).
Because of very positive response from last year's 'elective' options, if there is again student interest the last week of the program will offer electives in:
- mask making
- special repertoire
- Meditation and Composition led by Bapak I Made Arnawa
2011 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme
Recruitment for the 2011 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is currently underway. Forty-seven participants were sent from British Columbia, this past summer. Often we receive some strong applicants from the University of Victoria, and we hope it will continue, this year.
The JET Programme offers a minimum, one-year opportunity to experience Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) or Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) through an official Government of Japan program. ALTs work alongside Japanese teachers of English in the public school system, while CIRs are employed in local government offices. Participants gain valuable overseas work experience, learn about Japanese culture, and meet participants from around the world, while contributing to language education and international understanding.
Further information about the JET Programme can be found on the Consulate General of Japan’s website: www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp by following the JET Programme links. In general, applicants are required to hold a bachelor’s degree (any discipline) by July 2011 and be a Canadian citizen, to apply through the Embassy of Japan in Canada. The application and instructions will be online in the near future. Interested applicants may sign up for an application email notification by sending their name and email address to culturalcentre@consuljpnvan.com.
An information session will be held at the University of Victoria on Wednesday, October 27 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in MacLaurin D287. At the session, we will introduce the JET Programme, what it has to offer, and how to apply. We will also show a video, which will provide a visual account of what it's like to live and work in Japan as part of this program.
