SEA 320 The Theatre of Indonesia

An overview of Indonesian theatre and its forms from the complex and colorful wayang puppet theatres of Java and Bali, to the urban and rural folk theatres of the early twentieth century (including the dynamic, martial-arts derived West Sumatran randai) and the contemporary national art theatre. Students will read and discuss play scripts and brief introductory articles, while lectures will provide historical background and performance details. Videos, slides, and audio recordings of performances will feature extensively in this course.
