Summer (Short Term) Program
These programs are dealt by us (PACI). We usually announce the details around Jan.
Japanese Language Summer Immersion Programs run by the Department
Japanese Language Summer Program (Konan University)
Location: Kobe, Japan
Length of study: 6 weeks in June and July every year
Deadline: mid-February every year (announced in class)
Eligibility: UVic students who have completed PAAS131 successfully or who are
taking PAAS131
Program Fee: Approximately $3500 (depending on the exchange rate)
This includes tuition, textbooks and other teaching materials, the cost
for orientation sessions, transportation to and from the airport, hotel
accommodation on the first day, transportation of baggage, daily
transportation to and from Konan University, and home stay. The home stay includes two meals a day (breakfast and dinner).
What is not covered: airfare, travel insurance, lunch, etc.
Application procedure:
1. Submit an application to the Japanese language program.
2. A selection procedure is followed.
Japanese Language Immersion Course (Doshisha Women’s College)
Location: Kyoto, Japan
Length of study: 8 weeks in May to July every year
Deadline: early January every year (announced in class)
Eligibility: UVic female students who have successfully completed PAAS131 or
who are taking PAAS131
Program Fee: approximately $4000 (depending on the exchange rate)
This includes tuition, field trip fee, welcome and farewell parties’
fees, insurance premium
Accommodation Fee: Home stay: 120,000 yen (two meals per day) – 15,000 yen a week
Student Residence: 54,800 yen (single room and no meals) – 6,850 yen a week.
What is not covered: airfare, lunch, etc.
Number of scholarships: A limited number of 120,000 yen scholarships are available to
participants from the affiliated institutions. For a home stay student, the total amount will be paid to the host family to cover 2 meals/day and basic living expenses. For a lodger in residence, 54,800 yen will be allotted to the dormitory expense and the remaining 65,200 yen will be given to the participant at the beginning of the program.

Chinese Language Study Abroad Scholarships and Programs
Chinese Language Exchange Programs run by the Department
ECNU Exchange Program (East China Normal University)
Location: Shanghai, China
Length of study: one academic year (September to July of the next year)
Deadline: the end of January every year
Eligibility: UVic students who have commenced their study of Chinese
Financial Support: tuition, accommodation, and modest monthly allowance
What is not covered: airfare, visa application fee, and some administrative costs
Number of scholarships: Three
Application procedure:
1. Submit an application to the department office. The application should include a cover letter, a brief résumé and the names of two people who can be contacted for references
2. Go though a face-to-face interview
Renmin University Summer Exchange Program
Location: Beijing, China
Length of study: 4 weeks in July every year
Deadline: spring term of every year (announced in class)
Eligibility: UVic students who have commenced their study of Chinese
Financial Support: tuition
What is not covered: airfare, accommodation, and visa application fee
Number of scholarships: Two
Application procedure:
1. Apply to the Chinese Program Advisor
2. If there are more than two applications, a selection procedure is followed.
NSYSU Summer Exchange Program (National Sun Yat-sen University)
Location: Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Length of study: 4-6 weeks
Deadline: spring term of every year (announced in class)
Eligibility: UVic students who have commenced their study of Chinese
Financial Support: eligible for TECO MOE Award (USD$500) (Taipei Economic and Cultural Office - Ministry of Education Award)
What is not covered: airfare, accommodation
Number of scholarships: no limit
Application procedure: apply to the Chinese Program Advisor
External Chinese Language Programs/Scholarships
Chinese Government Scholarships
Location: One of the universities in China
Length of study: 1-2 years
Deadline: January 31 of every year (please check the updated information)
Eligibility: BC residents and Canadian citizens under the age of 35
Financial Support:
Full scholarship:
tuition, basic learning materials, accommodation, a monthly living allowance (CNY1400), emergency medical care, comprehensive medical insurance, a once-only settlement subsidy (CNY 1500) and a once-only inter-city travel allowance
Partial scholarship: tuition
What is not covered: international airfare, visa application fee
Number of scholarships: 5 full time scholarships and 10 partial scholarships

Confucius Institute Scholarships
Location: One of the universities in China
Length of study: (1) one semester, or (2) one academic year
Deadline: March 31 of every year
Eligibility: people not holding Chinese citizenship and under the age of 55
Financial Support: tuition, accommodation, a monthly living allowance (CNY1400), emergency medical care, comprehensive medical insurance, a once-only settlement subsidy (CNY 1500)
What is not covered: airfare, visa application fee
Number of scholarships: no limit
Application procedure:
1. Apply online
2. Submit the application package to Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver or BCIT Confucius Institute

Huayu Enrichment Scholarships
Location: university- or college-affiliated Mandarin training centers in Taiwan
Length of study:
(1) in general one academic year
(2) could also be 3 months, 6 months, or 9 months
Deadline: March 31 of every year
Eligibility: a. Be of 18 years of age or older, a high school graduate or above, have an excellent academic performance in his/her most recent formal educational study experience and be of good moral character.
b. Is not an ROC (Taiwan) national.
c. Does not have the status of being an overseas compatriot student.
d. Has never been a student at a Mandarin training center, nor a degree-seeking student at any university or college in Taiwan.
e. Is not an exchange student in accordance with an agreement of cooperation between an international university/college and an educational institute in Taiwan, at the time of receiving a HES
f. Has never received an award either under this scholarship program nor the Taiwan Scholarship Program.
g. Is not a recipient of any other scholarship or subsidy offered by the Taiwan government or any other educational institutions in Taiwan.
Financial Support: monthly stipend NT$25,000 (approximately US$735)
What is not covered: Recipients are responsible for their own expenses.

Canadian TCSL Association Summer Language Program Shanghai
Location: Shanghai, China
Length of study: 4 weeks in May of every year
Deadline: March 15 of every year
Eligibility: UVic students who only completed PAAS 110 or PAAS111
Program Fee: CAD1690.00 (includes: tuition, shared accommodation, breakfast, workshops and activities, group airport transfers to and from the hosting institute and sightseeing trips in Shanghai
What is not covered: airfare, visa fee, Airport Improvement Fees, travel and medical insurances, immunizations, lunch and dinner, optional trips to other cities, personal expenses, long distance calls, faxes, etc.

International and Exchange Student Services (IESS)
Exchange Programs for UVic students handled by the IESS Office
Length of study: Varies by the program
Deadline: The mid- or end of January every year for the programs starting the following
September
Eligibility: Full-time UVic students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 (B)
Students must have completed at least one year of study at UVic
Cost: UVic Tuition Fees, Cost of Student visas, required health exams, air fare and other
travel expenses Accommodation and food expenses may varies depending
on the choice of the programs
