Background Information

My area of research specialization is Indian Buddhism, with more general interests in other south Asian religious traditions (Hinduism, Jainism). More broadly yet, I teach at the introductory level in the area of Asian religions, including the traditions of China and Japan. Geographically my research interests are centered on the Indian subcontinent and Tibet. Recent research has focused on Buddhist ethics, meditation theory and practice, Buddhist hermeneutics, and socially engaged Buddhism. I also occasionally work in the philosophy of religion, especially in the area of mysticism. Recent articles have appeared in Journal of Buddhist Ethics, Journal of Contemporary Buddhism, the Journal of American Academy of Religion, and Argumentation.

My Ph.D., Meditation and the Concept of Insight In Kamalasila's Bhavanakramas, was completed at McGill University in 2003 and consisted of a translation from Sanskrit and Tibetan texts, with critical commentary. My studies have included extended periods at institutions in India (Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies), Nepal (Tribhuvan University), and Switzerland (University of Lausanne).

Present duties include coordination of the University of Victoria's new Religious Studies Program. Teaching duties are split between Religious Studies and Pacific and Asian Studies.
