APPROACH TO TEACHING

As I see it, my role as an instructor in the Pacific Studies Program encompasses four different, albeit overlapping, tasks: (a) imparting knowledge; (b) widening students' critical faculties; (c) improving students' communication skills (both written and oral); (d) providing a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas. These four tasks are integrated in every course that I teach or coordinate. I have formal lectures, discussion groups, and student presentations all built into each course, although the emphasis on these activities changes as students move from first to final year of their programs. Specifically, given the size of student population and their limited knowledge of the Asia-Pacific Region, a large proportion of classroom time in my lower level courses is taken over by formal lectures. It is only at the fourth year level that student presentations become the central feature.
