Introduction :
Welcome to Japanese Studies at the University of Victoria! We offer a wide range of courses in many different areas, from language and and linguistics, to theatre, literature, film, and culture. Our language program is carefully designed to take students--beginners or otherwise--from the very first steps in Japanese to a level at which advanced study in Japan is possible.
We offer intensive classes in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms taught by dedicated instructors. The usual course sequence is an intensive, four-semester program equivalent to a standard four-year program. In-class time is two hours per day, four days per week (one hour of which is allocated to Language Lab work); students are advised to allocate sufficient time for homework as well. Note that credit for each semester is 3 units rather than the usual 1.5. The courses are PAAS130 (JAPA149), PAAS131 (JAPA150), PAAS230 (JAPA249) and PAAS 330 (JAPA 311), as well as a number of upper-level courses intended to help advanced students improve their reading, writing and conversation skills.
