Introduction

The Southeast Asian Studies Program offers courses in the Indonesian language, introductory surveys of Southeast Asian cultures and societies, Southeast Asian literatures in translation, Indonesian Theatre, Southeast Asian Cinema, and seminars on selected topics in Southeast Asian Studies such as Indonesian Political History and Islam in Southeast Asia. Courses on Buddhism in Asia are also regularly available through the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, with coverage of Thailand and Myanmar.

Southeast Asia includes the countries of Brunei Darsalam, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The total population of the area is close to 500 million, and the region is typified by a diversity of ethnic groups, cultures, religious beliefs, and languages. While our program cannot provide complete coverage of this complex and vibrant region, we do attempt to provide students with sound overall knowledge of Southeast Asia, and a more in-depth introduction to Indonesia. We offer instruction in the Indonesian language, the language spoken by approximately half the population of the Southeast Asian region.

Indonesian language, derived from Malay and closely related to Malaysian, which is used in Brunei Darsalam and is also one of the official languages of Singapore, is spoken by nearly one quarter of a billion people. Students wishing to learn Indonesian at UVic generally take a four semester sequence of courses designed to provide the student with the fundamentals of the language and to equip them with a basic speaking ability which can be used as an effective platform for further study and possibly, an immersion experience.

The Southeast Asian Program offers both a B.A. Major Concentration, as well as a General/Minor in Southeast Asian Studies.
