Program Requirements

Students may choose between three degree options when considering a study focus on Southeast Asia. Two B.A. Major degree options and a General/Minor program option exist.

I. Southeast Asian Language and Literature Concentration B.A. Major Degree.

The first is a Major degree option focused on literature, culture and language, with Indonesian-Malay being the Southeast Asian language offered. However, this degree option also includes Pacific Studies courses surveying the entire Asia-Pacific region and the history of Southeast Asia, a course surveying the literature of a second Pacific-Asia area (China, Japan), and the possibility to take courses on Southeast Asian Art History.

II. Pacific Studies Southeast Asia Concentration B.A. Major Degree

The second major degree option focuses on the Pacific Studies courses on the history and social structure of Southeast Asian societies, but includes training in Indonesian language, and courses on Southeast Asian literature, as well as courses on theory and in a second Pacific-Asian area of concentration (China, Japan, Oceania).

III. General/Minor Program in Southeast Asian Studies

The third degree option is the General/Minor program requiring fewer units for completion. This program option focuses on language and literature, but includes the possibility to take a survey of the history and social structure of Southeast Asian societies.

1st and 2nd Years PAAS 100 (PACI 210) - 1.5 units PAAS 120 and 121 (SEA 100A and B) - 3 units PAAS 220 and 221 (SEA 200A and B) - 3 units PAAS 170 and 171 (SEA 201A and B) - 3 units 3rd and 4th Years 3 units selected from PAAS 370, 372, 373 (SEA 302A and B, SEA 320, SEA 324) 1.5 units of upper level language/literature/culture courses from Chinese or Japanese concentration 3 units of PAAS 368 and 369 (PACI 323A and B) PAAS 302 (PACI 392) 3 units selected from History in Art 330A/B, PAAS 467 (PACI 411), PAAS 468 (ｧPACI 412) 3 units selected from History in Art 430, 431, 432, PAAS 495-497 (SEA 481)

Requirements: Pacific Studies Southeast Asia Area Concentration

1st and 2nd Years PAAS 100 (PACI 210) - 1.5 units PAAS 120 and 121 (SEA 100A and B) - 3 units PAAS 220 and 221 (SEA 200A and B) - 3 units PAAS 170 and 171 (SEA 201A and B) - 3 units 3rd and 4th Years 3 units selected from PAAS 370 (SEA 302B), PAAS 373 (SEA 320), PAAS 372 (SEA 324), PAAS 495-497 (SEA 481) PAAS 368, 369 (PACI 323A and B) - 3 units 3 units selected from one of the following sequences: --PAAS 350 and 351 (PACI 319A and B) - China --PAAS 380 (PACI 321A) - Japan --PAAS 364 and 365 (PACI 328A and B) - Oceania PAAS 300 or 301 (PACI 325 or 390) or equivalent - 1.5 units A Southeast Asia Seminar PAAS 467, 468 (PACI 411, 412) - 1.5 units A 400-level seminar on China, Taiwan, Japan, or Oceania selected from PAAS 464, 465, 450, 480 (PACI 413, 414, 420, 422) - 1.5 units PAAS 400 (PACI 490A) - 1.5 units

Requirements: General Program in Southeast Asian Studies

1st Year PAAS 120 and 121 (SEA 100A and B) - 3 units 2nd Year PAAS 220 and 221 (SEA 200A and B) - 3 units PAAS 170 and 171 (SEA 201A and B) - 3 units 3rd and 4th Years 6 units of 300 and 400 level courses related to Southeast Asia to be chosen from the following 1.5 unit courses: PAAS 370, 373, 372, 495-497 (SEA 302B, 320, 324, 481), PAAS 368, 369 (PACI 323A and B), Anthropology 329, History in Art 333A and B, 359, 411, 431, 433.
