PEAK UVic: first year skills for your best UVic experiencePEAK UVic: first year skills for your best UVic experience

Peak UVic is a non-credit class for first year students to discuss current topics, contributing to their success at UVic. Topics will include:

  • Healthy Relationships — Which choices are healthy for you? What changes happen in first year?
  • Learning skills — How is UVic different from high school? What are exams like?
  • Health and Wellness — How do you stay fit and eat well without gym class and family dinners?
  • You and Alcohol — What is safe? What fits for you?

Once a week, a leader in the UVic community will meet with your group to explain the topic. Then you work with your small group to discuss the ideas and add your own thoughts. You will be with the same group all semester and have a chance to get to know each other and learn together.

You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a number of "Peak Prof" sessions happening from September through December. These evening sessions might introduce you to some of the cutting edge research being done on our campus, or might provide an extra review session for some of the first-year courses. We will give you a schedule of all your options during the first two weeks. You can attend them all or just select the 5 you need to complete the course.

The final component of Peak UVic offers you participation in an optional study group. Once you have met all your fellow Peak participants and your class schedule is firmed up, we’ll start organizing these groups. Study groups are a great way to keep on pace with your course content; typically, students who participate in study groups have higher marks than those who don’t.
