Departmental Undergraduate Student Awards

The Rodger Beehler Outstanding Essay Prize

Each year the Department of Philosophy invites faculty (who have taught in the past 12 months) to nominate undergraduate student papers they believe to be of outstanding quality.  Papers nominated (with the permission of the relevant students) are submitted to the Chair for consideration, and the winner of the prize receives $100 from the department

The David Kaplan Book Prize in Honours Philosophy

This prize is awarded each year to the student graduating in Honours Philosophy with the highest standing in those Philosophy courses offered for the degree.  The value of the award is $100.

The Anna Bertha and Frank Kluge Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student with the highest standing entering fourth year of an honours program in the Department of Philosophy.  The value of the award varies but has been as much as $250 for past recipients.

The Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award

The Department of Philosophy is able to nominate up to three students for this prestigious undergraduate award.  More information about the award can be found here via the Uvic Learning and Teaching Centre.

The John A. Farvolden Book Prize in Ethics

A book prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest standing in Philosophy 335: Moral Philosophy.

Jim and June Young Memorial Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Philosophy. Letters of application should include descriptions of students’ involvement with social democracy and/or industrial democracy.  Letters of application must be submitted to the Chair of the Department by March 15th. In the case of an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Philosophy. In the case of a graduate student, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Philosophy.
