About the Department
The Department of Philosophy provides programmes of study leading to the degrees of B.A., B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. Special arrangements can be made for a programme of study leading to a Ph.D. The Department offers a comprehensive programme of study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The undergraduate programme provides students with core courses on ethics, logic and the history of ancient and modern philosophy. All main areas of philosophy are represented in the curriculum. Information on undergraduate and graduate courses and programmes is available not elsewhere on this site.The Department takes pride in a strong record of research and publication. Strengths of the Department include aesthetics, applied ethics, ethics, logic, political philosophy, history of philosophy, metaphilosophy, metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. The Department cooperates with other departments and schools to provide interdisciplinary instruction. For example, the Department plays a leading role in offering the Minor in Applied Ethics and offers courses in conjunction with the Faculty of Law. The Department also participates in the Minor/Diploma Program in Social Justice Studies. Students majoring in Philosophy can at the same time pursue a Minor in Social Justice Studies.
