PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Since its inception in 1989, the Cultural, Social, and Political Thought (CSPT) Program has provided innovative interdisciplinary perspectives on issues at the forefront of contemporary theory. An exceptional opportunity for students wishing to pursue advanced theoretical studies at the M.A. level, the Program fosters critical and exploratory approaches to subjects that may not fit easily within disciplinary boundaries.

Graduate seminars are the core of the Program. Offered, in rotation, by participating faculty drawn from several departments, the seminars address topics that range from the philosophical and theoretical to the cultural and highly political. Reflecting the Program's commitment to interdisciplinarity, these seminars examine advanced scholarly developments in such fields as cultural studies, literature, social and political theory, philosophy, ecology, and gender studies. The Program also offers informal workshops designed to address methodological, pedagogical, and other issues of interest to students.

Graduates receive an M.A. or PhD in English, History, Political Science or Sociology, with a notation that they have completed the Interdisciplinary Program in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought. Students in the Program must take the CSPT seminar at least twice to receive the CSPT designation upon graduation. If they wish, however, they may take a CSPT seminar for credit for up to four terms.

Departmental requirements vary, but students are normally able to devote at least half their studies to Cultural, Social, and Political Thought. This includes work on a graduating thesis, which must be on an approved topic within the field. All other requirements for a disciplinary M.A. or PhD must be satisfied; these are detailed in the Departmental calendar entries.

Note:

  • The Political Science (CSPT) MA program takes approximately 2 years to complete.
  • The English (CSPT) MA program takes approximately 1.5 to 2 years to complete, but may be completed in 1 year, depending on the student's background.
