MA PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
In general, CSPT students must meet the core graduating requirements of their own department, as well as the specific requirements of the CSPT Program which are:
(a) 3 units of CSPT courses from either CSPT 500, 501 or 590
*Note: With Permission of the CSPT Director, CSPT credit may be granted for a graduate theory seminar taught by a CSPT faculty member in a department different from the student's own.
(b) An approved thesis which meets the requirements of both the CSPT Program and the home department.
* Note: The topic must be within the field of cultural, social and political thought and at least two members of the examining committee must be drawn from the participating faculty of the CSPT Program.
The length of a CSPT MA program depends on the department and varies between 1 and 2 years generally.
The core graduating requirements of the individual departments are as follows:
English Department
Students entering prior to September 2009
To complete the MA program in English, a student must complete:
(a) 1.5 units of ENGL 500
(b) 6.0 units of English Graduate courses
(c) 7.5 units of ENGL 599 (thesis) in the field of CSPT

Students entering September 2009 and later
To complete the MA program in English, a student must complete:
(a) 1.5 units of ENGL 500
(b) 3.0 units of English Graduate courses
(c) 7.5 units of ENGL 599 (thesis) in the field of CSPT
The English (CSPT) MA program takes approximately 1.5 to 2 years to complete, but may be completed in 1 year, depending on the student's background.

History Department
To complete the MA program in History, a student must complete:
(a) 1.5 units of HIST 500
(b) 4.5 units of History Graduate courses including: 1.5 units of Geographical field course, 1.5 units of Topical field course, 1.5 units outside area of specialization
(c) Language requirement
(d) 9.0-10.5 units of HIST 599 (thesis) in the field of CSPT
The History (CSPT) MA program takes 2 years to complete.

Political Science Department
To complete the MA program in Political Science, a student must complete:
(a) 1.5 units of POLI 509
(b) 1.5 units from one of POLI 507, 508, 516, and 540
(c) 1.5 units of any Political Science graduate course
(d) 6 units of POLI 599 (thesis) in the field of CSPT
The Political Science (CSPT) MA program takes approximately 2 years to complete.

Sociology Department
(a) Master’s students must complete 9 units of course work.
Within, or in addition to the 9 units of course work, they must complete two CSPT graduate seminars (3.0 units).
At least 12 of the 15 units must be drawn from Sociology listings in the calendar.
(CSPT 500 and CSPT 501 are considered Sociology courses if taught by a member of the Sociology Department).
At least 13.5 units must be at the graduate level; 1.5 units may be selected from undergraduate Sociology courses numbered 300 and higher (subject to approval by the Graduate Advisor).
(b) CSPT Master’s students are required to demonstrate competence in both sociological theory ( SOCI 503 or 504) and method ( SOCI 507 and SOCI 515).
(c) 6 units of SOCI 599 (thesis) in the field of CSPT
The Sociology (CSPT) MA program takes 2 years to complete.

Individual Interdisciplinary Program Requirements
To complete the CSPT program in the Individual Interdisciplinary program a student must complete:
(a) CSPT 501
(b) At least 1.5 units of CSPT 500
(c) A thesis worth from 6 to 9 units, on an approved topic within the field of cultural, social and political thought, under the direction of a supervisory committee including at least two participating CSPT faculty members
(d) 3 to 6 units of other courses at the graduate level approved by the CSPT Program Director and the Interdisciplinary Special Arrangements Admissions Committee, to a total of 15 units for the program as a whole including the thesis and CSPT course requirements

PHD PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
In general, CSPT students must meet the core graduating requirements of their own department, as well as the specific requirements of the CSPT Program which are:
(a) 1.5 units of CSPT 601
(b) 1.5 units of either CSPT 600, 601, 690
Note: With permission of the CSPT Director, CSPT credit may be granted for a graduate theory seminar taught by a CSPT faculty member in a department different from the student's own
(c) Completion of a candidacy exam set by the CSPT program as one of the comprehensive exams
(d) Written dissertation that meets the requirements of both the home Department and CSPT program with the topic in the field of CSPT
Political Science Department
(a) 1.5 units of POLI 609
(b) 3.0 units of additional Political Science Graduate courses
(c) 1.5 units of POLI 600 “Professional Development Seminar”
(d) Successful completion of candidacy exams in two of the Department's field areas, one of which must be in the field of CSPT
(d) 30.0 units of POLI 699 (dissertation)

Sociology Department
(a) 9.0 units of course work, subject to the same requirements that apply to other Sociology doctoral students.
(b) CSPT doctoral students are required to take one section of CSPT 500, plus one section of CSPT 501/601.
(c) In addition, students write, as one of their comprehensive exams, a CSPT exam, set by the CSPT program.
(d) 21.0 unit dissertation in the field of CSPT. The dissertation must meet the requirements of both the CSPT Program and the Department of Sociology. The topic must be within the broad field of cultural, social and political thought.
Note: supervisor must be a participating CSPT Faculty member who is also a member of the Sociology Department

English Department
(a) 4.5 units of English graduate courses (a CSPT or cross-listed CSPT course may be substituted for 1.5 of these units)
(b) CSPT 601 (1.5 units)
(c) ENGL 698, Candidacy Exam (the Major Field or Focused Field candidacy exam must be in the CSPT area, based on a reading list set by CSPT)
(d) ENGL 699 (Dissertation), 18.0 units minimum, in the fields of CSPT and ENGL

History Department
The History Department does not have formal provisions for admitting students to the CSPT program at the PhD level. Provisions may be made at a later date.
Individual Interdisciplinary Program Requirements
To complete the CSPT program in the Individual Interdisciplinary program a student must complete:
(a) CSPT 601
(b) At least 1.5 units of CSPT 600
(c) A candidacy examination within the field of cultural, social and political thought
(d) At least 4.5 units of other courses at the doctoral level, approved by the CSPT Program Director and the Interdisciplinary Special Arrangements Admissions Committee
(e) A second candidacy examination in a field approved by the CSPT Program Director and the Interdisciplinary Special Arrangements Admissions Committee
(f) A dissertation worth 30 units on an approved topic within the field of cultural, social and political thought, under the direction of a supervisory committee including at least two participating CSPT faculty
