| The Families in
Motion Research and Information Group (FMRIG) at the University of Victoria
involves a program of research and community education focusing on issues
of separation, divorce, and co-parenting.
Our research program is based on current knowledge about the family separation
and divorce process, and the factors that contribute to healthy adjustment
among children, adolescents and adults who are affected by family break-ups
and family reconfigurations. We are interested in identifying and supporting
psychological, relationship and contextual circumstances that help families
to move in healthy directions beyond the initial adjustment period following
marital separation. We are equally interested in circumstances that place
children in divorcing families at risk for more serious adjustment problems,
and how such problems might be prevented and resolved. We refer to "Families
in Motion," because we recognize that divorce is not a single, static event,
but a series of changing personal and family circumstances. The FMRIG researchers
try to consider family transitions, from the perspectives of various family
members, as well as from the viewpoints of professionals who interact with
divorcing families.
Our research program
at the FMRIG would not be possible without the individuals and families
who participate in our studies. We respect and value our research participants,
their time and their sensitivities. As such, we see it as a part of our
mission to provide participants with feedback about the outcomes of our
studies, as well as to bring our findings to the attention of those who
might use them in helping families undergoing change. This website is a
part of our effort to "give back" to families in transition and those who
support them. |
