Research interests

Kara ThompsonRecognizing how alcohol use fits into the lives of young people is a necessary foundation for designing effective remedies to counter risky patterns of use and prevent lifelong difficulties. My research seeks to understand the mechanisms of continuity and discontinuity in drinking patterns in adolescence and emerging adulthood. My goal is to apply contemporary statistical methods to improve understanding about the normative developmental trajectories of substance use across adolescence and emerging adulthood, as well as attend to the contextual and environmental factors that may exacerbate or attenuate increases in use. The specific focus of my recent work is on the association between alcohol use and heterogeneity in pathways of post-secondary education, including different types of education and degree obtainment. My goal is to advance our understanding of this developmental period, and enhance the well-being of youth and young adults by informing practices and policies that shape the lives of youth.
