Michael Picard

Ph.D. 1993 (M.I.T.)
Lecturer

Perception; Language; Cultural PsychologyMichael Picard

Michael Picard is an MIT-trained philosopher, international author, university teacher and public intellectual.

Trained in mathematical logic and analytical philosophy, Dr. Picard has taught widely in psychology and philosophy, as well as in applied programs like leadership and environmental or business management.

Picard is author of This is Not a Book, a playful but serious book that spans philosophy East and West, touching on skepticism, cognition, infinity, ethics, logic, metaphysics and spirituality. Published in UK and worldwide, it has sold well in UK (where it won a Book of the Week award), in the US, as well as in Australian and New Zealand. An improved second printing is available in Canada at Indigos. It has also appeared in translation in France (under Marabout).

He is the founding leader of Café Philosophy in Victoria, BC, a public dialogue series in philosophy that has run weekly for twelve years. Recently reinvigorated after more than 500 sessions, it now incorporates critical thinking practices and instruction while courting controversy and diversity.

Dr. Picard is a long-time lecturer in psychology at University of Victoria and is currently also Associate Professor in Justice Studies at Royal Roads University (where he has taught in various graduate and undergraduate programs, notably on logic, ethics, leadership, and sustainability). In psychology he teaches cognition, perception, history and methodology. With Professor Daniel Bub, he won successive UVic Learning & Teaching Centre Course Development Grants for History of Psychology in 2006 and 2007.

Dr. Picard has taught widely in philosophy, including beginning and advance logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, history of philosophy, and Eastern Philosophy. He has also taught ethics both in philosophy as well as in business and environmental management programs.

In addition to various published reviews and journal refereeing, Picard has edited two collections of essays on health care and public sector leadership. Caring Leadership (while still in print) was assigned in a nurse training course at York University.
