Department of Psychology

Participant pool

UVic's Psychology Research Participation (PRP) website provides a channel of communication between UVic psychology researchers and potential research participants. Faculty and advanced students in the Department of Psychology conduct research on a wide variety of topics, such as social interaction, perception, learning, memory, problem solving, and communication. Researchers post brief descriptions of their projects, along with information about when and where individuals can participate, on the PRP website. Potential participants browse those postings and, if they wish to participate in a study, sign up to do so.

Students

Some students can earn extra credit points by participating in studies posted on the Pool website. Above and beyond extra credit, participating in research is interesting and educational in its own right, and also creates opportunities for networking with upper-level students. Some projects also offer a small monetary $reward$ for participation; such studies will make this clear in their posted descriptions. Note that you cannot receive both extra credit and a monetary reward for your participation in a given study. Also, you can participate in any given project only once.

In most projects, participating involves having your responses measured as you perform a task or complete a questionnaire. Some projects are completed online, but most require you to attend a scheduled session on campus. All of the projects posted on the Pool website have been reviewed and approved by a special Departmental committee as well as by the University of Victoria's Human Research Ethics Board. The aim of the research projects is not to evaluate your personal abilities, but to explore human behaviour and how it changes under different conditions. Researchers will protect your confidentiality. You will be given a full description of the purpose of the research once your participation in a study is complete. Your performance (i.e., the responses you make) will have no effect on your marks.

Participants must be members of the UVic community, and MUST have a UVic email address (i.e., an email address ending in "@uvic.ca"). You cannot register to use the Pool without a UVic email address. If you are a member of the UVic community but lack such an address, please visit https://netlink.uvic.ca or visit the Computer Help Desk in Clearihue A004 (near the library) for information on getting a UVic email account.
