Current Research Team
Erica Woodin, Ph.D. ,is the Director of the Couples and Families Lab and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Victoria. Dr. Woodin obtained a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, and completed a Pre-Doctoral Clinical Internship at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York. She joined the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria in 2007.
Alina Sotskova is the coordinator for the Couples and Families Lab. Alina graduated with an Honours degree in Psychology and Philosophy from York University. Her interests include topics related to mood and anxiety disorders, trauma- and violence-related mental health concerns, wimmin's studies, substance misuse, minority stress, LGBTQ studies, and sexuality studies. Currently, Alina also works as an Addictions Counsellor in a Supportive Recovery Home for men recovering from addiction and mental health concerns.
Valerie Caldeira is a graduate student in the Clinical Life-Span Developmental Psychology Program. Her research focuses on understanding the influence of perceived social support on alcohol-related partner aggression.
Kyle Mueller is an undergraduate honours' student. His honours' thesis explores the link between discrepant alcohol use and partner conflict during the transition to parenthood.
Amber Cameron is an undergraduate independent study student majoring in psychology. Her research involves the ways in which couples adapt to parenthood, particularly for couples of at-risk infants.
Cassie Drake is an undergraduate independent study student majoring in psychology. She is interested in the impact of parental behaviours on infant and child development and is also exploring legal issues related to child custody decisions.
Jess Owen is an undergraduate independent study student majoring in psychology. Her research involves exploring factors related to postpartum depression, particularly in new fathers. She is also interested in the role of social support in protecting against postpartum depression.
Stephanie Capyk is a volunteer with the Couples and Families Lab. She is a graduate of University of Northern British Columbia with degrees in Anthropology and Psychology. Her final year neuropsychology research internship was focused on threat detection in facial expressions. She currently works as a Direct Client Services Manager for the Victoria Women's Sexual Assault Centre. Stephanie is also a practicing doula and a newbie to paddling around costal waters in a kayak.
Former Lab Members
Tia Egglestone is a graduate of the Psychology Honours Program. In addition to her work as a lab coordinator for the Couples and Families Lab, she also conducted an honours thesis with Dr. Gifford on verbal cues of romantic rapport in well-established couples.
