Trip to Bamfield
36 members of the Association participated in a visit to the Marine Sciences Centre at Bamfield on May 11-12. The Centre is operated jointly by five universities including UVic, and is recognized as among the best research and training facilities in the world for biologists, ecologists and oceanographers.
We travelled by bus to Lake Cowichan and thence via Nitinat on logging roads to Bamfield, arriving in time to find our accommodations and enjoy lunch. The afternoon of the 11th and the morning of the 12th were occupied with various activities including a presentation on invertebrate biology in the Whale Lab, a trip on the MV Alta which is attached to the Centre, and close-to-shore explorations on open skiffs. Several birds were seen including a Caspian Tern, a rarity in this area, and there were also sightings of black bears. Our group was impressed by the quality of the instructors leading these activities, who are part of the Public Education Programme of the Centre.
On the evening of the 11th Dr Brad Anholt, the Centre’s Director, and his wife Beth Rogers, who is University Programmes Coordinator, graciously hosted a reception for us at their home with its spectacular views over Barkley Sound. Later we enjoyed a BBC video on inter-tidal marine life, filmed at the Centre.
At lunchtime on the 12th we embarked on the MV Frances Barkley for the scenic trip to Port Alberni, where the bus collected us for the drive back to Victoria. Congratulations are due to the trip leader, Trevor Matthews, whose careful organization and great sense of humour ensured an enjoyable and memorable experience for the participants.

Fourty-four UVic Retirees departed Swartz Bay Terminal at 10:20 on October 7th. Upon arrival at Sturdies Bay, the group proceeded to the tourist information centre to meet Dr. Paul LeBlond, the guide for the day. Paul then lead the group to the fledging Galiano Museum, Bluff Park and then on to Dr. Betty Kennedy's place at the west end of Georgeson Bay. Dr. Kennedy is a retired member of the UVic Mathematics Dept. and a founding member of the UVRA. Arriving at Betty Kennedy's place, the group had their picnic lunches that they packed and Paul gave the group a brief history of Galiano over lunch. The group then briefly toured Montague Marine Park and the Jaapense Charcoal Pits before proceeding north to Retreat Cove to view the waterfront cave and admire the scenery. The group returned to Whaler Bay and then on to catch the ferry at Sturdies Bay returning to Victoria at 7:25 pm. All and all an extremely interesting trip.
