UVic Sailing Fleet Renewal Project
Passion, Sustainability and Accessibility: Ensuring the Future of UVic Sailing
What We Do:
The UVic Sailing Club creates valuable and unique opportunities for members of the UVic community to escape the rigors of their classes and labs, and learn to sail, sail recreationally, and participate in a rigorous race team that travels all over the United States and Canada.
UVic Sailing provides unique opportunities for students to grow and learn outside of the classroom. Students learn team work, leadership, and organization, and are constantly challenged to improve and grow personally, and constantly improve the Sailing Club in order to provide better opportunities for all students.
Sailing at UVic is focused on both recreation, and highly competitive racing within the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, providing students of all backgrounds and interests the opportunity to participate in what is normally an expensive sport.
Accomplishments:
Some of the most noteworthy accomplishes of the UVic Sailing Club over the past four years are:
- Teaching hundreds of UVic students how to sail each year
- Organizing and running dozens of all ages social events for all UVic Students
- Buying a fleet of 6 Collegiate FJ sailboats and a motor boat from the University of Washington
- Cleaning up, and improving the UVic Sailing Compound in Cadboro/Gyro Park
- Becoming a full member of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (Only the 2nd Canadian school)
- Consistently running race team practices 3 times a week
- Traveling to an average of 16 regattas a year in Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, California, Hawaii, and elsewhere in North America.
- Hosting an Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association regatta, the Western Canada Cup two years running
The Future:
In order to continue to maintain the same quality of equipment, and services in the future, and in order to meet the extremely high demand for sailing lessons, we need to plan for the retirement of our current fleet, and the the purchase of a new fleet of Collegiate FJ's, and coach boats.

Our goal is to replace our entire fleet by the 2011/2012 school year so that our program can continue to provide the high level of service and equipment UVic students staff and faculty have come to expect. Our Collegiate FJ fleet was built in 2005, and is starting to show signs of its use. The success and popularity of the racing team, sailing lessons, and recreational sailing all put significant wear and tear on the equipment. By the 2011/2012 school year we expect the maintenance required to keep our fleet in top condition to become to expensive and time consuming for Uvic Sailing, and our volunteers to keep up with. The boats are wearing out due to the success of our programs. Help us continue to provide these amazing opportunities for generations of students in the future!
