October, 2007:

UVic researchers share in 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. Arif Babul, Physics and Astronomy awarded the title University of Victoria Distinguished Professor. It is the highest academic honour that the University of Victoria can bestow on a member of faculty. It is be awarded to members of faculty who have achieved great distinction in the areas of both teaching and scholarly research, and who have made a substantial contribution to the University and wider communities and whose work is of exceptionally high international calibre and whose teaching and student supervision is outstanding as judged by peers and students. Read the article in The Ring.

The 2006/07 Faculty of Science Teaching and Research Excellence Awards were given out at a ceremony on September 7, 2007.
The recipients were:
Teaching Excellence Award: Barbara Currie, Biochemistry & Microbiology
Teaching Excellence Award: Thomas Fyles, Chemistry
Research Excellence Award: Alisdair Boraston, Biochemistry & Microbiology.

New faculty appointments:

Dr. Raad Nashmi joined the Biology Deprtment. As a neurobiologist Raad's long-term research goal is to understand the basic function of nicotinic receptors in modulating neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS) and to elucidate their role in a variety of neurological disorders including nicotine addiction.

Dr. Pavel Kovtun joined Physics and Astronomy. A theoretical physicist, his main research interest lies in understanding connections between quantum field theory and string theory in order to use them to address phenomenolgical questions in particle physics.

July, 2007:

New faculty appointments.

Dr. Ryan Budney, Mathematics & Statistics. A geometric topologist his research projects are concerned with the homotopy type of spaces embeddings. His novel approach to problems has already resulted in proven breathtaking, internationally-recognized theorems in topology.

Dr. Irina Paci joined the Chemistry department as an Assistant Professor. Her research group develops and uses multi-scale and theoretical and computational methods to understand fundamental apsects of the self-assembly of molecular materials and to ivestigate their properties.

Dr. Jeremy Wulff joined the Chemistry department as an Assistant Professor. His research interests include the synthesis and evaluation of compounds that inhibit, activate or detect protein-protein interactions of medicinal importance. Some of these compounds are complex natural products (or derivatives thereof) while others are designed to have certain desirable properties. Ultimately, it is hoped that these studies will lead to new ways to treat cancer, viral infections and other diseases.

Dr. Jon Willis joined the Physics and Astronomy department as an Assistant Professor. An astronomer, Dr. Willis conducts research at the frontiers of observational cosmology. His focus is the evolution of galaxies and their environments amd the properties of dark matter.

Dr. Rogerio de Sousa joined the Physics and Astronomy department as an Assistant Professor. His research area is theoretical condensed matter phyics. Research projects addresse several theoretical questions related to the design and optimization of quantum computer and spintronic devices based on semiconductor, superconductor, and magnetic nanostructures.

May, 2007:

Dr. Laurence Coogan, Earth & Ocean Sciences has won the Young Scientist Award from the Mineralogical Association of Canada. the award goes to a young scientist who has made a significant international research contribution. Coogan's research concentrates on the formation and cooling of the earth's crust under the oceans.

April, 2007:

Dr. Andrew Weaver, Earth & Ocean Sciences named BC's top academic. The Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC (CUFA-BC) named Weaver the Top Academic of the Year in recognition for his work in engaging the public on climate change issues, and for his efforts to make weather science more exciting and comprehensible to elementary and secondary school students. UVic press release.
