Beginning in the academic year 2000/2001, the Faculty of Science has annually presented an "Award for Research Excellence".
Purpose 
This award recognizes and rewards excellence in research by a faculty member in the Faculty of Science who is at an early stage of his or her career.
Award 
The Award for Research Excellence in the Faculty of Science consists of a commemorative plaque and a cash prize of $1000. The name of the Award winner will be permanently displayed on a wall plaque in the general office of the Dean of Science. The award is supported in part by a donation from the Quail Rock Foundation, as well as other donations.
Eligibility 
- Nominees must be within twelve years of receipt of the PhD.
- Nominations may be updated and kept in the pool for two years after their original nomination year, even if that extends beyond the 12-year limit.
- Nominees must have been faculty members in the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria for at least three consecutive years at the time of their nomination.
- Both tenured and untenured faculty are eligible
- Previous winners of the Award are not eligible
Nomination Procedures 
- Nominations may be submitted by faculty, staff, or students of the University of Victoria.
- The nominator(s) must determine that the nominee is willing to let his or her name stand for the award.
- One nomination from a given department or school will be accepted each year. Nominees from a previous year may be updated and re-submitted.
Supporting Materials 
- A covering letter from the nominator, outlining why the nominee merits the award.
- A standard University of Victoria curriculum vitae.
- A statement by the nominee of no more than three pages outlining his or her research
- Letters from at least three referees, at least two of whom must be from outside the University of Victoria, who are highly knowledgeable about the field of research of the nominee.
- Copies of five publications that the nominee thinks represent his / her best work. Under unusual conditions this number may be modified.
Selection Committee 
The selection committee for the award will be the Research Advisory Committee of the Faculty of Science, Chaired by the Dean. The Dean will vote only in the case of a tie. That committee noramlly includes one representative of each of the six units of the Faculty, plus a graduate student in the Faculty. The selection committee may decide, after reviewing all of the nominations, that no candidate merits the Award in a given year.
Deadline for Nominations 
March 1 of each year.
Award Presentation 
The Award for Research Excellence will be presented at an award ceremony early in the Fall academic term.
