Outline for the Elementary Curriculum program

Education (Elementary Curriculum) (BEd)

To be considered for admission, students must complete at least 15 units of course work acceptable to the Faculty of Education by April 30 of the year of application. Detailed information about this course work is outlined on the Faculty of Education website. Read this information carefully before selecting courses.

Approved English (3 units): Two of ENGL 135, 146 or 147. Students must achieve a minimum grade of "B-" for ENGL 135 or a B- average for ENGL 146 and 147 to demonstrate competency in written English. Refer to the UVic Calendar for more information about this requirement.

Approved Canadian Studies (3 units): HIST 130 or two of CS 102, ECON 100, HIST 131, HIST 132, POLI 101 or SOCI 103.

Approved Mathematics (3 units): MATH 161 and 162 are recommended. MATH (100 or 102), 101, and 151 are also acceptable. Students must achieve a C+ average to demonstrate competency in mathematics.

Approved laboratory science (3 units): Choose from ASTR 101, ASTR 102, BIOL 190A, BIOL 190B, CHEM 101, CHEM 102, EOS 110, EOS 120, EPHE 141 or EPHE 241, GEOG 103, PHYS 102.

Approved electives in a teachable subject (3 units): Choose 3.0 units from subjects related to those taught in a BC public school. For example: anthropology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth and ocean sciences, environmental studies, French, geography, history, Indigenous Studies, physics, political science, psychology and sociology.

Notes
The English, Canadian Studies, Mathematics and Laboratory Science courses listed above are recommended. Speak with an academic adviser if you have completed English, Canadian Studies, Mathematics and Laboratory Science courses that are not listed here.
We recommend that you choose courses from two science areas (for example, BIOL 190A and EOS 120) but we will accept 3 units of course work in one science subject (for example, ASTR 101 and 102, BIOL 190A and 190B, EOS 110 and 120). We will accept physical geography courses and up to 1.5 units of human anatomy or physiology courses.
Students who have already completed post secondary course work should speak with an academic adviser in the Faculty of Education.

All programs offered by the Faculty of Education require at least one year of approved university-level course work; at least one program requires the completion of an undergraduate degree. The admission requirements for the programs offered can be found on the Faculty of Education website.

The application deadline for BEd (Secondary Curriculum), Kinesiology and Recreation & Health Education programs is January 31. The deadline for all other Teacher Education Programs is January 2.

Some Faculty of Education courses are available to students registered in other Faculties. For example, A E 103A, A E 103B, EPHE 141, EPHE 143 and M E 101. Be sure to check the UVic Calendar for prerequisites.
