Neena Chappell

Neena L. Chappell has focused on social gerontology throughout her 30+ year career. Her interest lies in the demonstration of the value and relevance of sociological thought and research for applied issues in aging. She believes rigorous University-based social science research has a critical role to play in the non-university community. Emphases on care giving, health and social policy in Canada and cross-nationally characterize her research. She has established two world class university research centers on aging, one at the University of Manitoba and one at the University of Victoria, where she continues to conduct research. She has published over 250 academic articles and reports and brought in over $40 million in research funding. She has been the Canada Research Chair in Social Gerontology since 2001 and is also an Advising Professor at ECNU in Shanghai and has been a distinguished visiting scholar at the University of Hong Kong. She is currently President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology and president-elect of Academy II (social sciences) of the Royal Society of Canada.
