Assistant Professor

Andre Smith

Dr. André Smith is an Assistant Professor with research interests in the areas of aging, mental health, ethnicity, and qualitative methods. His research program reflects a desire to understand health and illness in relation to their social, institutional and policy contexts. He has worked on research investigating the cultural idioms of psychiatric distress and the utilization of mental health services by immigrant and refugee populations. He has also studied the diagnostic experiences of people suffering from dementia and their families and, in collaboration with Dr. Kobayashi, examined how cultural values and immigration history mediate intergenerational understandings of dementia in Japanese Canadian families.

Dr. Smith is currently investigating the social determinants of blood donation in Canada with colleagues in the Department of Sociology at UBC. As a member of the ELDERS research team (also at UBC), he is involved in research on the social determinants of oral health in elderly populations of Chinese and Punjabi origins. Another interest concerns the way institutional policies, regulatory environments, and organizational cultures influence care practices for persons with dementia. Finally, Dr. Smith is affiliated with the Centre on Aging, where he is involved in research on caregiver experience in the context of dementia treatment.

Dr. Smith is the Honours advisor and teaches courses in qualitative research methods, health and illness and mental health. He supervises several graduate students in the areas of health, mental health, and aging.
